Over the years the breed became lighter as they became more of a carraige and riding horse. Today the Cleveland Bay are used for farm work and driving, as well as under-saddle horse work. They are particually popular for fox hunting. They are also popular for their trot having large action which makes them good at jumping in performances. The Cleveland Bay generally stands 64 to 66 inches. They are always bay in color. Bright bay horses that have more of a reddish tint than normal are the most preferred by breeders.
